Why Play Un-rated Chess Games ? ?

Sort:

I need a little advice. I started playing chess here on May 14, 2012. I have only played in rated games. When I won or lost, the reward or punishment was a change in points. Up or Down.

I joined a tournament someone started, and now the next 8 games I have to play are un-rated. I don't understand why they have un-rated games.

Can individual games be rated without being in a tournament?

I real life and not Chess.com I know the game that I play face to face with my opponents aren't rated, but the rewards for a loss or a win is given to me face to face with a smile by the winner and a friendly parting knowing I lost maybe. It is a totally blank feeling without any finality to the game.

After the eight games are finished they are to be reported to some one and then two of the players are advancing from every group. Into another part of the tournament.

If they aren't rated, I don't even want to advance. I am toying with the idea of withdrawing from those prelimenary games or as soon as the games start forfeiting the game and giving them a win. I don't want to ruin their stucture.

Seems like something is missing, in that type of game.

What do you guys think of rated or unrated games? What do you suggest I do? Can you convince me on way or another?

Please no silly remarks. Thanks.

I agree.  An  unrated tournament is odd.  If someone wants to practice an opening that they are not familiar with and do not want to risk rating points trying it out, then simply set up an individual game that is unrated.  It does seem pointless (pun intended) to be constrained to a tournament when overall nothing matters.

I love unrated games.  That way I can play offhand games with people I know without worrying about my rating maybe taking a big hit.

And I must say "no silly remarks" coming from a giant purple ant seems a bit...well, silly. Smile

Denvergh...u serious? Why block? Maybe a new thread is needed to try and get blocked by Denverhigh?

The problem with on line chess is fritz or some other none human, so grades/points mean little.

Here is a grading system from God's own county where players face each other.

Hi Rekorts.

I don't have a problem with the rating system. I like receiving something and having something taken away.

I just finished one unrated game and there was no feeling about it. I won but un-rated didn't feel like anything.

Hi Romans

That is a good suggestion on using un-rated games. I do have three openings that I want to try out.

Usually you can just message someone and ask if they would like to play a few unrated games in that line. Or start a thread asking for volunteers. I'm currently playing three such unrated, opening-specific games, at the request of two forum members.

I can try the three opening playing three games with you. Can takeback option used in unrated. I can help Mr Denverhigh.

Hi Blueemu

That is a great suggestion. I went to your games and checked them out. By the way I liked your two old games and I left you a comment.

people should not worry about there rateing on chess .com because you can never be sure if the person your playing on line is cheating. OTB is the best way to no just our good you are.

You seem to like rated games only.  So be it.  What do you do?  Do what you want.

Why do people play unrated games?  Here's my story.  I quit playing rated games b/c I'm so f'ing competitive, and the stupid internet rating exacted too much energy.  Plus I made an idiotic blunder as I was approaching the elusive 2000 rating, so I threw a chair down the stairs.  lol

Hi Lisa

Wow. Violence begets you. Hope you don't do that when you play OTB. I just put my self down when I make stupid blunders. I remember when I had dial up connection and my mouse would drop the move I was making and It landed where I didn't want it.

I used to get angry at my mouse.

I believe that I have changed my mind about the use of un-rated games and they have a purpose to try things I am learning before I actually use them.

Thank you for the input.

I don't like to play unrated chess. But I think the reason why they don't want to play rated is that for them to not lose there ratings (if it's already high etc.)

Reminds me(violence), years ago over the board, my opponent picked up his king, threw it just missing my ear. He jumped up and ran out of the room.

Our captain came over and asked "What happened?"

"I think he resigned."

"Are you okay?"

"Yes, he left his jacket."

Hello Ms Jen

According to what you posted it led me to believe that a take back option was a FACT. It didn't look like a question.

Sorry to everyone if you also thought that there was a take back option.

Bye for now.

I think there is a antidote about a grandmaster doing that in a tournament.

By the way did the jacket fit you?

Hello Wbilfc!

I guess I was too abrupt and he insulted my ant.

I asked for no silly stuff because I didn't want this to be taken over by a bunch of silly idiotic stuff that would not stay on the subject. I really wanted the input and everyone helped.

I will delete him from block members club.

Thanks to all of you for helping me learn how to use the un-rated games. I will use it to my advantage.

I think I would like to go up in rating and my short term goal will be a 1800 rating.

Hi Roma 60

I don't worry about losing rating even if they cheat. But I would like to get at least 300 ratings points higher for now. Most of the game I play are in my group matches. I think that they are more honest and they are all rated games.

Bye and thanks for the comment.

ictavera

I don't care if it is rated or not, I just want to play. I don't feel good after playing a chess game because my rating changed, I feel good if it was a good game, be rated or not.
