I visited from England last year. Managed some chess everyday! Central Park was the obvious place - free- strength quite varied (1600-2400). Also had some good games at the Village Chess Shop against one person (2100) - slight fee to pay. Tried Washington Square Park (think thats the name), but never saw any chess.
