Playing chess using keyboard

manavendra

I work on multiple computer screens and prefer using keyboard more often than mouse. I even have Vim key bindings to help me navigate and click a hyperlink in a webpage just by typing a key.

However, since online chess games I am playing are java app, the keybindings don't work there and I am forced to use my mouse. Would you consider adding a feature, where we can make a move by typing, lets say, exd4, Nc3, Kh1, etc.

This would also help me memorize the moves and chess openings for a rewarding blindfold play. Blitz players may excuse this feature unless they are touch typist.

I would get behind this feature-request as well.  It is actually one of the reasons I don't play here very often.  I strongly prefer typing moves in and double-checking them before hitting enter to avoid mouseslips.

I agree that this would be a nice feature.

I agree too. Too many times I've slid a rook one square short of where I wanted to slide it.

It's nice to know so many people backing up this feature. It's a direct advantage to many but i would also like to explore it's disadvantages. The primary one being that once you have keyboard input form field in a webpage it becomes very easy for another program/chess engine to enter data directly to it. So, this may result in lot cheatings, etc where you can easily transfer the control of a live game to a chess engine. Although there are ways to avoid such hacking, I want to know Chess.com opinion about whether this is viable in near future.

one thing I learned in UI design is that there should always be a keyboard option.  So for online/correspondence play, yes, there should be a way to input moves.

Having both Mouse and keyboard input fields have their own advantages. Consider two players playing chess on the same device, say iPad, laptop etc. While one player can use mouse, the other one can use keyboard to play without ever having to swap hardware for each move.

what does bump mean?

It is faster than clicking and dragging, but misclicks would be just as often, but i agree they should have this feature. Fritz has it.

@captain222 it's basically just making the thread appear on the most recent list, If someone says "bump" they want their thread to appear on that list so they can get a question answered and what have you. You'll see it all over the place reading threads on the internet.
