Thanks, the answer to my question is now clear. For Daily Chess it seems 3 and 4 are allowed!
(4) is NOT allowed as you phrased it in your post.
4. Use of computer or separate board to try different lines of play
"Use of computer" is prohibited in games on this site, if the computer is equipped with a chess engine.
As a rule of thumb, in daily games you can make use of references which do not change state while you are consulting them... so a database is OK but a chess engine is not. One exception is an endgame tablebase, which is forbidden regardless of its inner workings.
I think that is where they got the idea that a separate board was not allowed at all. From what I understand using a separate board to try out different lines of play has always been forbidden. But apparently using a separate board is now allowed, as long as it's not used to try out different lines of play. Is that right Martin?
My statement is not site official, just my understanding of it. The site allows the use of Square Off and DGT boards, so I would guess it would be officially allowed as well ![]()

worse things happen. i know the frustration. i could name 20 things easily that are worse than what i experience on this site voluntarily. i shud make a thread on it. then we can say this is small potatoes to what we experience in the off-line world.
On this site 1,2,4 are considered cheating, 3 is fine on daily games.
why would 4 be considered cheating with regards to daily games.

I think you are misunderstanding.
He means computer like turning on your IBM 286 to run the web browser and log into chess.com to analyze a game with the engine turned off.
It is not computers that are forbidden. It is chess engines that are forbidden.
it's ok to use a chess program but not an engine that goes choo-choo
Shaking my head!
Are we OK with blackmail.?.....because I'd like to black-mail some people here... https://www.chess.com/forum/view/general/is-it-ok-to-blackmail
Love and Tolerance...Until it doesn't align with what i believe.

I doubt that he meant that. This is an internet site. How exactly is he going to log onto it without a computer? Use two Dixie-cups and a piece of string?
Even handheld devices like iPads and SmartPhones are computers.
blueemu - By #4 I meant self analyses mode which is on the computer but does not use an engine. Basically shows the board and lets you look at provisional moves, but does no evaluations or calculations itself. Sorry if that was unclear.
ThrillerFan - Thanks for the tip on the Nunn's rook endings, but I'd rather just focus on being a better player than rely on copying endings from a book. I did see that the rules vary at different places, a player must be careful to check what is allowed for each site!
Mako Cat - I had recalled watching a chess match on TV and when the game was adjourned until the next day I was surprised to hear that the player's team and computers would be analysing the game all night! However, this may have been 30 years ago and perhaps, as you say, it's not done anymore.
I had to look up what a tablebase is and have seen it is forbidden since it is considered to have computer evaluated positions (those that win!) Now I have seen a site where for any opening position it shows possible next moves, how often they are used by master players and how often they lead to a winning game! I guess because that is like an evaluation it would not be allowed. I will continue to use the self analyses mode on Daily Chess because I think I can learn to improve my game by using it. I would prefer not to use databases while playing a game, even if allowed for Daily Chess, still seems wrong to me, however, it may be a useful learning tool to follow along a book opening. Although in that case I think the opponent should be informed that you are relying on a book for the opening moves.
