You are right,Qg8 is a mate to.Good find

No, 4.Qg8+ is answered by  4. ... Ng7

And then it is too late for Nf4 to be checkmate because black King can then escape to f5.

Thank's I missed the Ng7

Another mate in 5 alternative :) Also shows why Qg8 is not a checkmate

in posting #56 achintya4003 posed a mate-in-4 problem that was (for me) more difficult than today's daily puzzle. I had a hard time getting the third move.

It should be noted thatin this puzzle the only worry was putting the black king in stalemate - otherwise eventual checkmate was inevitable.  But getting it in 4 moves was quite a challlenge.

white to move and mate in 4...

achintya4003, I think there's an alternative solution to your puzzle...

1. Ne5+ Kd2 2. Re3 Kd1 3. Nc3+ Kd2 4. Nc4#

And this one...

1. Nf4+ Kc3 2. Rd4 Kb3 3. Bc2+ Kc3 ( 3... Ka3 4. Ra4# ) 4. Ne2#

There's a problem with the 'proper' solution though because 3... Kc3 leaves White unable to mate in 4 moves !
Also in your alternative mate, 3... Ka4  means the king escapes via a4 !

Why does black play Bf8 after white plays Qe8+? Why not Kh7?

Foyn after that white plays g6#, not a good option for black
