So . . . was white just going for a draw?  There were plenty of other ways to do that.  How does white queen that pawn.  "Solved" doesn't seem solved yet.  Doesn't Black just move the rook to e8?

This a practical chess problem, the reason behind bishop sacrifice is the square h8 needs to be vacate for white rook, if black king doesn't take white rook on h7. 1.Rg7+ Kxh8 2.Rh7+ Kg8 3.g7 and now black king has option of capturing the rook or moving his rook. 3...Re8 4.Rh8+ and the black with a skewer 4....Kxg7 5.Rxe8. White bishop need it to vacate that h8 square  so white rook deliver check on h8, this kind chess problem really help with your accuracy in calculation.

If 3...Re8 then 4. Rh8+ Kxg7 5. Rxe8 wins easily for white.  However you are correct in that 3...Re8 is better from a material standpoint for black than 3...Kxh7 4. gxf8=Q.

The strongest moves in chess are those that are winning against multiple defense attempts.  This is a perfect example.

Agreed, but it isn't quite that simple because white needs to also consider, and then hopefully reject, 1. Bf6 which also vacates the h8 square for white's rook while threatening immediate 2. Rh8#.  It seems like an even stronger idea than the puzzle line, but of course black has the saving move of 1...fxg6.
