Question from a new person...why wouldn't the pawn just kill the queen?

It can't because it is pinned by the bishop.

I don't understand...what does it mean to be pinned?

Means the pawn can't take, or Black would be putting himself in check.

Problem with this puzzle before it starts, black would not have left white's Queen standing.

And if the puzzle had said "Black to move" you'd have had a point. If. Duh.

  • #113

    easy one :-)

  • #114

Congrats to those who noticed it. It was pretty easy if you ask me, if you noticed the bishop.

Why Qa4 instead of Kb8 by black?

     If:

    1. ...      Kb8??

    2. Ra8+!   Kxa8 (forced)

    3. Qa7+  Kb8 (forced)

    4. Qxb7#

  • #116

good one... I missed the pin at b7 initially.

  • #117

  • #118

  • #119
