5/16/2007 - Subtle, difficult moves

  • #21

For some reason, the fastest mate my computer can find is in 12 with 1. Be6+, even after a depth of 26 (which should be more than enough to find a mate in 11, shouldn't it?).

One line (there are several equivalent mates, at least after 7. Qb7):

    1. Be6+ Rxe6 2. Rxe6 Qa1 3. Qb3 Kh7 4. Qxd3+ Kg8 5. Ra6 Qxa6 6. Qxa6 Re8 7. Qb7 Kh7 8. a8(=Q) Rxa8 9. Qxa8  g5 10. Qb7+ Kg8 11. Nf5 Kf8 12. Qg7+ Ke8 13. Qe7#

It obviously still works, but I'm not sure why it can't find the faster one. Maybe the puzzle is leaving out a longer line that could save black for a few moves?
