Is there any reason that white's first move here could not be to move the knight down to F3?

qxc1+, then queen back to f4.  White only saved 1 move.

i was trying to move white, lol. After about 5 perfectly good mate forcing moves, i gave up and clicked on the solution and realized i was supposed to move black. That just seems odd to me. I though we're supposed to play white every time in these puzzles.
