    nope, the queen will block the King pathway, so means after qxd4 still f4 mate.

    Yet note that the 5 move line originates from a divergence of white, not black... White would not play 2. f4 in the first place. It is not an option that black can take. 4 moves suffice.

    Solved it. Nice puzzle. It's different (easier) if you know there is a possible mate in 4 and if you are just placed in front of a board with no clue.
