Matter is made of atoms. Your body is made of molecules and atoms. Molecules and atoms have electrons orbiting around somewhere in this molecule, at times far from the nucleus.

So whenever a molecule gets close to another molecule, this is electron getting close to electron. But as we all know, like charges repel, so the closer the electrons are to each other, the more repulsion there is between the two. These forces of repulsion can be very large.

That said, everytime you feel the sensation that you're touching something, in reality this is the force of repulsion of the valence electrons. When you push against the wall and are unable to keep moving your hand further into the wall, that's all electromagnetic repulsion. The electrons aren't actually "touching" the way we imagine it in the macroscopic world. Atoms aren't touching either. You could say that in some sense, they are floating. Now of course, these distances between atoms and electrons are so small that we can't perceive them with the naked eye, but they're there.
