EndgameStudier

What? It left out the bold for 4. g5 kh8  5. Bd4...winning. You're right , white can force a win.

After Kf6, how would black lose in that variation. King just runs to H7 there are no mates.

So how would you play Black differently from move 4? Post your move.

How does white force a mate? Am I missing something?

Same position as in #196 after white's fifth.

I know, I have a bad short-term memory, you don't know how often I have done redundant variations in my analyses. This puzzle should get an award.

Arisktotle

Not really. The preferred main line is the one with 8. ... e1=Q and it has the disturbing dual Kf5+/Kg5+. I could nominate a different main line but it would not be as attractive. The standards for winning awards are pretty high in a time where every composer has an engine + plus a tablebase in his toolbox.

Oh, and I added some viarations to the solution in response to the discussion!

One of the best puzzle i have seen

Arisktotle

Thanks for your appreciation! That's why I do this stuff.

Did you create it?.. if so, astonishing

Follow the thread backward and see that RubenvanHogenhout played his part as well! Like a writer, a chess composer is inspired by the observation of his environment.

EndgameStudier

Gave both trophies
