Does anyone know the solution to this drill?

You would need to post the position so we know what you are referring to.

I want to get a sense of where you are in chess.  Can you solve this with white to move first, and then black to move first?

Thanks for your help.

Perhaps not optimally, but I'm familiar with the principles that white wins if 2 of three conditions are satisfied. 1) the king is in front of the pawn 2) white has the opposition 3) the king is on the 6th rank. So white tries to achieve these and black tries to prevent them. Against the computer:

As white:

1.Kf2 Kd7 2.Ke3 Ke7 3.Ke4 Kf6 4.Kd5 Ke7 5.e3 Kd7 6.Ke5 Kc6 7.e4 Kd7 8.Kf6 Kd8 9.e5 Ke8 10.Ke6 Kd8 11.Kf7

And black cannot prevent the pawn from being promoted.

As black to move first:

1...Ke7 2.Kd2 Ke6 3.Kd3 Kd5 4.e4+ Ke6 5. Ke3 Ke5 6.Kf2
