How do I checkmate with a rook and a king? I know how to checkmate with a king and a queen though

you need to gain 'opposition' with your king, and you can do this by wasting moves with your rook.

as soon as you get opposition, your rook comes up and checks, then you force your opponent back 

Just like thecentiped, I used a system.  I am sure there are many systems to use to checkmate with a Rook and King.  The one I use came from Silman's Complete Endgame Course.
