here's my tips:

don't play fast, think of how the opponent might respond , or how the opponent might play next, so you can counter it.

something i've seen is that the only difference between a 1000 player and a 1600 player is that the 1600 player sees more of the board. having played a lot of games, they can counter moves more easily. To see the board more, you should get used to losses . i played a daily game once, and spent around an hour trying every combination i could think my opponent could play against me, and he had a much higher rating than i did.

PercyPawnwell,

One tip that helps almost every beginner is to slow down and build a simple thinking habit before every move.

Instead of focusing on openings or memorizing lines, try this during your games: before you play a move, quickly ask yourself what your opponent is threatening, whether any of your pieces are hanging, and whether there is a simple tactic like a check, capture, or fork in the position. Most early losses come from missing one of these basic moments.

Also, try not to rely too much on fast game review at the beginning. It is much more effective to take just one of your losses and spend a few minutes trying to understand where the first big mistake happened, before looking at the engine.

If you keep doing that consistently, your rating will usually start to move even without changing openings or studying a lot.

What type of mistakes do you feel happen most often in your games right now?

The icbm is great if you can play against people who don’t know about it : )
