Opening

I started with the english opening, which was not a good idea. I started playing chess months ago and I whould say that the London system or the Italian Game are really recommended for beginners with white. With black I would recommend The Scandinavian Defense or the Petrov Defense.
Try the Stonewall Attack...
"How to think ahead in Chess" by Horwitz and Renfield explains how to play the Stonewall Attack. Better yet... and much more detailed is Andrew Soltis text on the Stonewall Attack. You can buy both those books used for pennies... Or fish around on the internet and get the PDF's
Both are worth their weight in gold!
The plans are clear, and themes are easy to grasp. The better you get at them the more sophisticated your attacking themes get. This opening was played at the highest levels in the late 1800s... at that level, the Stonewall Attack is anything but basic! look up Pillsbury or Lasker's handling of the Stonewall Attack.
I have the Stonewall Attack in my repertoire (I'm a class B player USCF OTB) Master the details and this opening will produce results. Caution... your opponents will get mad when you beat them with this... lol... thinking its a beginners opening.
That said, most opening monologues have this as the Anti-Stonewall, those positions are still playable...
