As far as I know, it is always better to end calculation with opponent's move, also for long calculations like 4-5 move. You should visualise the position, you can try doing rook endgames as it is slighly easier to visualise the position yet to reach.

I made a mistake in my last game. Instead of developing the queenside, I developed the center, and this led me to a blunder of a three-way combination: ...Qh4+, g3 , Qxd4, Qxd4, Nxd4 and then a losing endgame.
Tell me what steps you need to take in order not to blunder and calculate long forced lines.
