How did 4. Nxd4 take you out of book in the Scotch? It's the natural continuation and the only move ever played.

So wouldn't d4 be the move taking him out of book 
maybe he knows what it is or is more used to seeing Bc4. I took him out of book on move three in a forum game. (e4 e5 f4 exf4 Bc4
