The closest you can get is Black to move, with White's knight on h3, after which Black has to play a3 to pass the turn back to White.

That's exactly right. When I posted it last month, I thought people would be stumped for a while, but someone solved it about as quickly as you did. I guess it wasn't so hard after all. Now the only one I've posted that no one has made any serious progress on is #570 in the Shortest Proof Game thread, now a week old. Maybe you can be the first to crack it.

lol.... I hate to break it to you, but most of the time I spent before replying was me eating breakfast and making a phone call 😅 it was an interesting puzzle, though. I never thought of making something illegal by controlling the tempo of one side.

Wait, when you say no one's made serious progress on #570, do you mean no one's proved it at all, or no one's beaten your moves? If it's just a matter of proving it, I'll probably take a look at it sooner. Optimising the speed of the speed of the proof just feels like it'll take ages to do, which is why I haven't gotten around to it.

No proof game has been posted for that position. That needs to happen before anyone can try to make it shorter.

this is my illigal position

The pawn on the first rank makes it a little too easy.  You should aim for a position that seems at first glance like it might be legal.

Ilampozhil25

true

but where to put the line of "easy to find" is subjective

something hard for the average player may be easy to me or trivial to you

And we've both messed up on easy positions when overlooking a stipulation on side to move.  But even then, it could turn out to be a good shortest proof game position with the other side to move.

Ilampozhil25

true(except "easy" is subjective)

but a proof game might be practically impossible for the average player, very hard for me, and just about possible for you

n9531l1

And that's what would make it a good proof game challenge.

Ilampozhil25

well everything is subjective of course

and my blurb at the proof game thread says that i may not find it enjoyable to try to shorten this type of proof game and also to compose this type of position

Ilampozhil25

wait how did the rook get to b1?

the bishop couldnt have moved obviously so illegal

n9531l1

cxb1=R

Ilampozhil25

im an idiot

I was thinking about the moves on the other side when the post disappeared.

It won't take that long if you'll tell us when you left.
