In 3d chess, the knight would have 48 possible legal moves on an 8x8x8 cubic board! 6 directions to make the initial 2 square move, and then 8 ways to make the perpendicular 1 square move (including diagonals in this case because they are still 1 square away in a perpendicular plane). 6x8 (or 24 x 2) = 48.
