rjbuffchix

If you're playing against the Buffchix, your best first move is to resign. Then, sit back and stew in your own butthurt while I eat wings and laugh in your face.

Bobby Fischer said 1 e4.  Other World Champs or win-percentage analysts said 1 d4 or 1 c4.  I don't think anyone here has the knowledge or insight into the game to challenge any of those claims.

Certainly, it depends on your set of skills and experiences. I once played for a men's softball team where I had the LEAST skills, but only one other player wanted to play catcher, his knees wouldn't let him do double-headers and we were in a Sunday Double Header League so I made the team.  I quickly learned that I would play the most innings if I generated a high batting average, NOT if I tried to hit home runs.

So I went for the cheap base hits and played a lot.

Other players were on the team because of long-ball hitting skills.

So what's better, going for the home run or going for a single?  There's no one answer!

I think the same thing applies to e4, d4, c4, Nf3 when opening a chess game!

Quickest possible win for white happens after 1.a3 g5 2.e3 f5 3.Qh5

Forkedupagain

That is the million-dollar question. Great comments and answers from better chess players and I but still no definitive answer.

1. d4 is the best move (although c4, e4 and Nf3 are also sound).  The best counter to d4 is Nf6, and White's best second move is c4.
