Are older games more interesting?

Well, older games have long been noted as being more exciting, because of all those dashing piece sacrifices, before Steinitz came along.

Given that basic tactics is something beginners need to learn before wading into positional chess, older games might be considered "more instructive" at least for beginners as well.

I don't think that future chess can become more exciting, simply because the goal of chess players is to win, and what Steinitz pointed out was the rational, scientific way to play Chess that works. So it's not as if we can go back and forget what he showed us. Somehow, more exciting play woulld have to also become rational play, and that means changing the rules of Chess somehow - and it would be very hard to make the kind of subtle change that would bring about the desired result.

I agree I wish people played chess as a fine art rather than an exact science.

I wonder if top players nowadays play chess to play chess or just to win.
