OTB game - should I have continued as Black?

Sort:

I played Black and received a draw order, and took it. Only afterwards, I came to know that my opponent was rated 100 points lower than me. Then I regretted having accepted the draw, and regretted not knowing on beforehand about the rating gap.

I could have played on, and go to the bottom testing his tactical and end-game abilities.

The best way to tell, is to hit the finish against computer button, and see if you could play it out.  But other than that, taking a draw here was a very resonable option.

HolographWars

Draw was best. White is actually winning a pawn. ...Ba6 Nd2 wins.

Sounds like you got rather lucky.

True.

Wait, you received a draw ORDER? Must have been a rather inexperienced TD.

Moemist

what time control are you in? classical / rapid?

i once got a drawn KRP vs KRP ending in a classical otb tournament, my opponent offered a draw and i rejected it because i'm pretty confident that i could win the endgame. i blew it pretty fast and lost. and only after the game i knew my opponent was a NM.

the lesson is always investigate your opponent rating before the match happy.png

Damn spelling check

The draw was a gift.  You didn't play that great and could benefit from analyzing the game.

The OP most likely learned English as a second lanquage. He almost certainly meant draw offer.

Caesar49bc:  Are you sure it's his second lanquage?

How about, we all just relax a little with all the grammar correction.

I am telling that sometimes my phone is 'correcting' my text and, while I intended to post an English word, it replaces it with a known Dutch one.

Anyways, thanks that chess.com is not only offering chess lessons but also English lessons.

I played Black and received a draw order, and took it>>

That's illegal now. It's advice.

But white is much better.

White will soon be up a pawn.

And therefore, white is much better. I hesitated to say that white has a won game, because it's an edge pawn.

Edge pawns are outside passed pawns. It’s a winning advantage.

I'm sorry but I didn't bother looking, because the question was whether black should have played on. Incidentally, some of us were looking at a topic where one side could have created two outside passed pawns, one on each side, and still it was a draw, although it was K+R vs K+R+p+p. The only possible win is if the superior side could have created a passed f pawn.

This is the thread. There was some discussion as to whether Stockfish discovered a winning solution that was over 40 moves deep but it wasn't demonstrated. It may be there but probably beyond anyone except top GMs if it is.

I was only reacting to the apparent claim that all outside passed pawn advantages are winning. I'm very bad at endings unless I happen to be playing very well, when I'm extremely good. wink.png

Then it's obviously a sign of natural brilliance.
