How can I stop this type of game?

This is the 2nd recent game like this where I had no idea what to do to gain the lead.

I think you could have had him on shot 41, if you’d moved your queen to G6, no?

I was playing as black

Once I can afford it again, I will plan to pay for the services here so I can study and play more end game scenarios
JamesColeman

7.d4 wins material and is pretty much game over -very typical tactic. I didn’t have time to look at the whole thing.

I can go back through those check mate sequences. I actually missed a two bishop check mate the other day, and soon as I moved, Irealized I missed it. I really need to think through every position before I commit to a move.

Go back and look at JamesColeman's comment (#7) again. If you learn nothing else from this game, learn how the tactical idea behind 7.d4! works Thistactical idea comes up in thousands of amateur games every day--and it's usually missed. Learn it!

Hillmoor

Try 36...Qh2 (instead of opening your back rank to the rook attack).  Sets up attack on the white queen.  If play had continued as the game went, white missed mate at 41 as AAinsle noted.
