THANK YOU!!!!! My mystery is solved.
No problem, I enjoy an opportunity to solve or create a chess puzzle!
How about this one?
Just saw all the replies to my puzzle. Thanks, guys. jivvi, your puzzle is nice too. In your puzzle, I guess white must offer his Bishop for a chance to win. Although, black is not forced to except this sacrifice. Definitely interesting!
Looking at it now, in fact, I think your puzzle is not a forced win, is it?
No, but White must sacrifice the bishop to keep the game going. The only move which keeps the bishop defended is Kf6, which is stalemate.
White can force the capture though:
Only one line is a forced win for White; Bg8 and Black refusing the sacrifice. Anything else draws.
(Black to move)
I can't think of an example of the type of situation you're talking about, but here's an example of a situation when one side has enough material to force checkmate but cannot avoid either stalemating the opponent or drawing by insufficient material.
Here's what could happen if White isn't paying attention:
In the actual game, Black was under time pressure and captured the rook on the second move.
