I agree. Nobody owes you a resignation. Checkmate them.

I was surprised my opponent resigned here. I mean, he's behind but I'm no master, I don't think it's a hopeless position, only 1 pawn down.

Seems like white is in trouble, but I don't know that it is hopeless. 

It may also have been a frustration resignation if he felt he made a mistake, or just wasn't playing well, or something may have come up and he needed to leave.

Well on the internet regardless of the site i have people resign right out of the opening with an even position only because the opening play didn't go the way they had planned ! But trying to explain  the motives of why people do certain things on the web is generally a waste of time , you could be playing an 8 yr. old and their favorite cartoon came on .  Laughing
