Amazing Queen Sac in King's Indian Defense: Blitz Brilliancy

Sort:
RM888

I just played a blitz game in which I was on the receiving end of a brilliant queen sac by my opponent in the King's Indian. It was a Mar del Plata variation with 9. Nd2. You hardly ever see such brilliance in blitz, and it was rather humbling.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but 24...Qh4+?? is not even close to being sound. By contrast, 24...fxg3 wins instantly.

SmyslovFan

Yes, astounding! Except for the bit where White completely ignored the attack on his king and virtually created a self-mate.

24. Qh4+ isn't a good sacrifice, you just completely ignored black's threats. While not the best move in the position, 26. Bf2 would've kicked the knight, allowed your king to escape if necessary and would've left him with absolutely nothing.

Are you guys sure? My opponent and I are both rated about 2000 USCF, so I doubt it's as bad(in other words hope that it's not as bad) as you guys think it is. Maybe you're missing something?

Uhhhh...after Qh4+ , I was searching for a way to possibly lose as white, and I couldn't find a way. However, you "found" it!

Feanor73

Houdini rates white around +17 after the 24. Qh4+.

lol that's so true

yep 24.fxg3  and then mate in 2...

any move by white,  Qh4+ (or not +  if Bh2)

Bh2 or Kg2 or any move if not check and Qh2#

and you overlooked your opponent pieces coming to your trapped king, obviously it was going to end badly...

BTW white missed golden opportunity with 22. Bxa7 followed by Nb6 which wins at least the Bishop if not the Rook depending on his response.

Thank you for wasting 5 minutes of my life.

For all of you guys whose engines said that it was unsound, you might want to run your engines for longer because my engine often evaluates my own KID attacks as unsound even though the advantage often shifts monumentally after following the inital "best lines".

I did not look closely at the position in question, but OP does have an interesting point. This sometimes does occur in King's Indian positions.

Why would it be a waste? I think everyone's missing something.

Okay. I let my engine run for about 30 minutes (~13,500,000,000 nodes) and it rates white as +15.82 after 24. ...Qh4+??. One line for after 25. Nxh4? goes like this; it's pretty easily defended:

+1

OP, you're the one missing something. You might want to take a look at the 24. fxg3 variation. And I did not analyze in depth the Queen sacrifice but some other players did and it seems it was totally unsound..

Feanor73

That's what's really weird - his opponent had a forced mate from 24. ...fxg3, but he missed it and went for an extremely unsound queen sacrifice that, ironically enough, was lauded by the OP.

I'm amazed that someone is rated ~2000 USCF and didn't make a single defensive move after the Q-sac. Black wasn't exactly hiding his intentions.
