I have two stories of beautiful checkmates that ALMOST happened.

Here's the first story:

I won a game in a rated over-the-board tournament in which my opponent had to choose between losing by smothered mate, or losing by epaulette mate, or just losing a Rook for nothing. Instead of allowing me my beautiful checkmate, the villian decided to lose the Rook and then immediately resigned.
