Ng3 may well cover everything for now, but White is just a pawn down with Black having an ongoing attack and a positional edge after something like ...Rd8.

 Not as cute as the previous posts smothered mate, but, still, a recent game with an exchange sacrifice to gain the initiative in a line of the Sicilian I've not (I think) encountered before.

That's a fairly well-known trap in the Budapest Defense. I've reached that position before playing Black.

 @W-Luke: I had a look at the suggestion (the position also piqued my interest), albeit only with the on-site engine (which gave a consistent -2.70 in blacks favour, over -2.01 in declining the sacrifice); whilst you are correct in that it prevents any checkmating ideas, I think you might have to give back the knight in return, something along the lines of this:

Ziryab

I love the Black side of the French, but I play 1.e4 about half of the time, so I face the unpleasantness of playing against the French. Lately I've been playing the Exchange variation, which is a poor way to strive for advantage as White. Nonetheless, players of Black sometimes get lazy when equality is offered so easily.

In the last game, there's a pretty cool checkmate

yes, but i was happy to win against such a strong player. i didn't look at this line.

This game happens a lot in bullet. Sometimes even in blitz. If you do this as black, please reconsider your use of premove happy.png

@raintong: I realise that this a little late to your post. However, I think your line of reasoning in #6841 might miss a zwischenzug; after capturing the knight instead of the bishop, there is Bxd2+! saving the bishop.

@Pacifique; what was your planned continuation after 14. ... Qxh1+ 15.Ke2 Qd5! 16. Bxf7+ Kf8, is that not ok for black?

Here's a slightly longer game then my last; a tables turned, late (heavy piece) middle-game, sacrifice.

As for Pacific's game, I don't get it either after Qd5, I tried to force things with c4 or Bxe6 trying to sneake in Qxb7-Qxa8 but too many pieces were hanging. Perhaps just hope to survive the ending an exchange down, but that's hardly a succesful opening for white.

Qd5 in which move?
