Adding a new defualt time control for rapid

Sort:
Avatar of HOUND_OP

From my experience, 15/10 can sometimes be too long. But, we don't have the option to choose a defualt rapid time control of say, 10/1 and custom time controls rarely work. I would like to see a rapid time control added which is larger than 10 min but smaller than 15/10. What do you people think?

You can always start a search for opponent and add whatever time control you want. As you've found out, it is difficult to have many games like this as you are relying on someone choosing your game which rarely happens. A good thing to do is to search for games through message boards or real life or virtual friends who would play with your time control rather than putting in a search on the website.

Thanks for the advice, but I still think adding a time control would be better.

i have thought about this and although i would love a default 30/30
i think it would just split the available pool

other places have more default time controls but the games arent as consistently “good” (i almost always get tougher comp here)

but that is why we have choices

i really like 10 and 30 min here and i like 30/30 somewhere else

but i totally would like to have my dream time control in a perfect world along with the consistent strength of opponent

There a several "default" time settings. Just hit "custom game" button. ]

One issue with the game options is that different devices will show different time options. All will give the usual time options between bullet and 30 minutes, but I think chess.com game app on android gives an additional selection of even longer time controls.

Hmm. Time to put my math skills to work.

Regulation time is 90 minutes (40 moves) + 60 minutes = 150 minutes.

Minimum time is 1 minute per game.

Make 10 logarithmic graduations (we have 10 fingers).

150 to the 9th root = 1.7449698104440144398334899681783

Dead timing.

90 can be 60 + 30.

150 can be 90 + 60.

In this way, Chess.com can gather all the players and beat any competing chess sites.

I believe there is a time control for 45/45.

I personally would love a 30 | 30 default. I have trouble finding 45 | 45 games and 15 | 10 is too fast for me. The 30 min is okay but I usually run into time trouble which kills it for me.

That's because Chess.com is not intelligent enough to gather the players in a few time controls (much like weight classes in combative sports)

Chess is very much like Highlander.

Dead timing is also more dramatic. It's like a ticking bomb, literally.

And automatically pair players within 50 Elo points.

Lower rated plays White.

I think 15/10 is just too fun

I wouldn't have rapid any other way

The way I see it 1, 2, 3 minutes per game are ridiculous. Anything less than 40 minutes is ridiculous (but that's my preference).

Start with 5 minutes.

5 minutes times a fraction for 10 graduations to get to 150 minutes.

150/5 to the root of 9.

 #   Log  Rounding
    1          5.00               5
    2          7.30               7
    3        10.65             11
    4        15.54             16
    5        22.67             23
    6        33.08             33
    7        48.27             48
    8        70.44             70
    9     102.79          103
  10     150.00          150

Scratch this idea. With logarithmic distribution, it doesn't really matter if you start from 1 or 5. From 1 the time control can be more analog (the way we perceive things) and not digital.

Custom times, yes. But I have mentioned in the original comment that custom times rarely find a match.

Over 4 million games get played here each day. I think the site is offering what most players want and there are options to create seeks for longer time controls.

As has been previously mentioned, you'll probably have better luck with long time controls if you join a club that plays them.

Avatar of Caesar49bc

There is a "slow chess" club. I think their default time control is 90+30.

Can anybody post that club's link?

I can't imagine playing that slow on a computer screen, but maybe someday I'll get a DGT board. That's at the very bottom of my chess bucket list. Under the section labeled "wishful thinking". 😋
