Any suggestion on how to improve blitz ratings?

On Fide Arena (relatively cheating free), my Rapid (45'+10") rating is around 1850 and my Blitz (10') rating is 1400. This huge rating gap is causing me great discomfort. Apart from I want to have somewhat decent ratings on 10' game too, it it is very hard to make ppl belive that you are not doing something suspicious in slow games.

My uneasiness on this subject has grown so big that I have decided not to play longer games untill I get to 1600 in 10' games.

Any suggestions on how to improve blitz ratings?

When playing blitz, I face most problems against unconventional openings, gambits etc so it may suggests that Iack in opening prep but then I also find it difficult to find right attacking ideas in blitz.

My observation is that I am a positional player and try to find positional weaknesses in my opponent's game and it is easier to do in slower games. Don't know. I am 37. Is it too old an age to have bltz ratiing closer to ur slower game ratings?

Any suggestions on how can I improve my blitz play?

Here is a recent Blitz game I played against a veteren GM who kind of has an iconic status in Indian chess circuit... I finally crumbled in time pressure. I have not annoted it yet

Btw many thx to this GM who without me asking for it graced me with a game. I was too hesistent to ask him for that and if any of you have asked a GM for a game, you know what probability is there for him to say yes.

So it was very nice of this GM to have a game with me and that too not a bullet game.

I suggest you lift your rapid strength to 2100. By then, your blitz rating would surely be close to 1700... :-)

I know what you mean. Blitz rewards bold attacking play, rather than patient positional chess when you don't always have time to transform your positional pluses into something tangible.

That being said, the 400 pts rating gap is nothing to be ashamed of, especially on FIDE Arena, where the monitored games are rather clean IMO.

A couple ideas :

  • play with increments (give you more time to win a superior endgame)
  • work on solving tactics faster (ChessTempo blitz mode can help)
  • improve your knowledge of your opening repertoire (so you can play both the opening moves and the early middlegame faster and better)

Thanks guys... sorry for the delay in response. I am solving tactics on CT but not in blitz mode but even the regular mode helped me a lot in pattern recognition.

My observation is you tried to set the board in fire in this game lol.

lol yeah, I am writing the foreword of Shirov's next edition of 'Fire on the board'.

Jokes apart, I am still trying to determine how to play blitz agressively or positionally. Especially against titled players. Till now this agressive style worked fine against them. Apart from this game, I had won a game against a FM with King's Gambit (25'+10'). Even in this game I maintained a decent advantage till 26th move. Thats why my low ratings in blitz are a matter of concerned to me.

Practice on 3|0, play as fast on 5|0. See improvement.

I think study of endgame patterns is a good idea. The only endgame I can say I really dominate is K+P vs K and positions Philidor and Lucena, but I've got half points and even full points thanks to them in time trouble several times.

Blitz chess is throwaway chess. Don't take it seriously. Live with the fact that you suck at it. It doesn't make you a worse chess player.
