The English Defense is 1. d4 b6 or 1. d4 e6 2. c4 b6.

I don’t play either, but I could see the Caro fitting my playing style better.

What you ttalk about is Owen defense. I tried it in blitz but positions i didn’t like too much compared to to Caro.

Given the choice between the two, I prefer the Caro as Black - mainly because of the exchange variation. With the French, the Exchange leads to pure symmetry (which I find a bit boring). With the Caro, the Exchange still keeps some imbalance.
Objectively, though, they’re both solid choices.
