This is me 5 years ago and I'm 62. Won a triathlon with the largest running team in the Chicago suburbs. so, yes I know how to keep my body in shape. Just saying the mental exercise aspect is just as important, later in life.
Chess as a cure for Alzheimer's
I am surprised that nootropics -- drugs and supplements that improve intellectual performance -- are not more used and discussed in chess. Using some of them may also help slow the onset of Alzheimer's Disease. I think, though, that people are making a mistake in characterizing all cases where older people act senile as Alzheimer's Disease, since the vast majority of these cases are just ordinary senile dementia. You can only accurately diagnose Alzheimer's Disease by examining the pia negra of the brain, which is only possible at autopsy, and autopsies are very rare. Before the 1980s, Alzheimer's Disease was taken to describe only cases of pre-senile dementia, usually occurring to people in their fifties, and when I first started hearing all this talk about Alzheimer's in the media I wondered why such a rare disease was getting such coverage. But the constant talk of Alzheimer's now is in most cases just over-use of a technical term.
Yeah, I just assume Alzheimer's is an all encompassing term for dementia. Although the article specifically states Alzheimer's, I posted it as a means to hopefully ward off any kind of dementia.
But there again I'm British we breed real men, not your namby pamby boys like the yank's.
I hate to burst your bubble, but Brits are considered the quintessence of weak. Us "yanks" beat you in 1776, saved you in WW1 and WW2 and lead you in everything else.. including chess! Sorry, but I felt compelled to stick up for my country.
I'm not criticising your country, it would take too long. You did not save Britian in the wars, that's the American film industry version... Britain has never been conquered since 1066. You were late into both wars and participated in the defeat of Nazi germany. " participated " You couldn't best the Japs without the bomb. You couldn't defeat the Vietcong.
You lead us in stupidity, gun crime, being fat, and electing idiot leaders. Britain has given the world many, many positive things. From penicillin to the jet engine even America's favourite pass time TV is a British invention. Your whole space programme was founded on German know how. Have a nice day. Given your resources you have given the world very little.

Well, yeah you did criticize it and here you are doing it again. I'm pretty sure you would be speaking German today, had we not saved you. To say that Britain, not America, has "real men", especially today, is just laughable.
So for all you older guys, like me, we can keep our minds young and healthy by giving them the one exercise proven to help.
The "Stair-master for our minds"!
Diet and exercise keep our bodies in shape, but this completes the 3rd piece of the puzzle.
I don't think it can reverse it, but it can sure help prevent it. I returned to chess because, in retirement in my 60's, I wanted something to keep my mind sharp. Not only preventing Alzheimers, but helping you remember the phone number someone just told you, recalling your recipe for Mississippi BBQ Sauce, etc. are helped by chess.

Well don't keep us waiting! What is the recipe for Mississippi BBQ sauce?
