Help everybody!

My good friend AlCzervik has been abducted. Intelligence has confirmed my worse fear. Me and him had some tough time and did not see eye to but he does not desrve what is about to happen to him. We are not how but 2 parties .....lethal enenmies. They are in the process to determine which side will have him.

Sadly the winner of that game will have the right to with him as the choose. They were reading our comments on chess being a sport and in their sick sense they have made it a sport to hunt/slaughter him brutally later. Stopping playing chess......(hmmm) .... and gather your arms this his time of need.

Hmmm it is late!

I went down in the basement but before i got near the door i heard

"Those stupid humans can play this game so can we"

In my friends house when i visited.

"They think the only sport we play is chase the mouse or we chase each other" "Yes chess is a sport, meow".

royalbishop

Proof Chess Boxing is not limited to humans!

BTW, outside of the Olympics (where national allegiences play a part), the "subjective evaluation" that you speak of in boxing is frequently accurate.

That's exactly why I included Olympic Boxing: nobody would argue in defining Boxing as a Sport, when it might well be The basic model of one vs one competition with fair rules. In its older form, the match would go on till one of the boxers resigned or was KOed, with no subjective evaluations involved. But the winning by points change this aspect, especially in the Olympic version of Boxing, when KO is almost never an issue (very short matches and head protections) and assessment by the jury's components of how many punches reached the target is the main factor in deciding the winner.

The point is just defining what are the key features which define an activity as Sport: some guy was saying "if Chess is a Sport then Matematics are too". If Mathematics are used as a fair competition instrument, then why not? Sport is fair competition.

Without a clock saying who's faster, running, swimming or cycling are physical activities, not Sports.

Fair rules you say?

Now that we have technology in year 2013. We can back and slow down the fights and see the punches thrown and where they are thrown. Did the Ref miss it? Ref paid off? Ref have a $$$ favorite?

The ranking system..... do i need to say more. Ever since Don King the work to make you stay to see the big fight when they feel it reaches maximum desired potential for a big payday for everybody.

How many times have i heard the guy was stepping on my feet when i tried to retreat and he threw a punch simultaneously.

When i boxer falls he should hit a button that counts out the time he is down not he call it out himself. With a viewable counter we eliminate the possiblity of him going slightly slower or faster in favor of another opponent.

Again, sorry for my poor English.

But the Boxing example (NOT Chess-Boxing) was there because, being a physical one on one fight with relatively ancient rules which should prevent the most severe injuries, Boxing is possibly the most basic or rustic or "pure" example of Sport.

The idea was that a fair competition is a Sport, independently by the level of physical activity involved, hence the assignment of points through subjective evaluations of a jury is more a case of discussion for a discipline being defined as a Sport, imho (especially relevant topic for Olympic Boxing, when KO is almost always absent, but more fitting example are those Olympic competitions mainly based on "artistic" components, as I numbered in a previous message).

Ok time to take off one of my gloves. Ahhh too much i will just take one of my pinky hate to see your neighborhood have tremors.

Chess.com does have 2 activities that can be classified as a sport. 1 you might have a case to argue the other forget it. Well you have to play it too really feel you it wears you down mentally and physically. It is not for everybody and very few that try it remained in the league. It is meant to be a team game but an individual can take it on alone but not advised to do so in a game.

It is a grueling game that can take from 14 hrs to 24hrs of constant playing. It has to be played as a team but would not suggest a player go it alone for the team longer than 4 hrs. For this reason players on a team may start off together in the first move and leave soon or later to return and play energetically. More like taking shifts. Communication is a must to play as a mistake can lead to a blunder. Which many know you still may be able to make moves now but the game is over in 8 - 20 moves from now.

Now if your a trooper and can go the distance of 14hrs which is the average length of the games the first season when i played and has moves up to 18 hrs since then and the longest game last a little over 24hrs and many of the longest games of each season have came close to 24hrs. If your a trooper you have to time to prepare for .....Restroom breaks, interruptions by family (mainly your spouse), tv (want to see it live as somebody may tell you what happened), Baby( ??? If you do not have a babysitter do not even start playing), weather( I had rainstorm that came by and took out my window i had to run back and forth taking care of that and playing), food( Never have enough food for some reason), Cooking( this is separate due to have to have a real meal not just snacks and sandwiches/  plus other people in the house have to eat as you have kept them away most of the time which is needed).

Also depending on which country your from you may have to start at between 5-7 am. As the games start 11 am GMT. And if not then  you have the disadvantage of it getting late in 12 hours while it just starting to get late for your opponent. Or your team mates are in opposite zones but try to help out as much as possible.

Now on communication! Every player plays differently no 2 the same. Any good team has a leader of co-leaders with no ego. Regardless of rank (but not under 1200 naturally) they have a chance to give input. LIke sports you have to make adjustments as the game may favor your team mates style and not yours at all.....AT ALL. Now the opposite can also happen as it may just favor one person at the time. This is now called trust which also required in sports.

Ok back to those 18 hrs of play! If you stay on long enough your hand may start to be in the shape of the mouse. It happened to me twice. Just have to relax it and take my hands off it at times. Now many people will sit in front of the screen with bad posture .... only because they feel comfortable doing this. Not recommended when you play this game.

Well i have to talke about getting the game started. This from an Admin perspective. As Admin(group leader of all activities) it is hard to find the best time to play these games so most of the players can play. Most of us have busy lives and do not have 18hrs to play 1 game and need to keep up with their own games at this time. For this reason the started off as being played about twice a week to  ONCE A MONTH on the weekend (Saturday prefered).

Well think i am finished ..... not. This is just the fundamentals why it is a sport. Did i forget something? Yes  I did it on purpose

What is the name of this  game  played on Chess.com ?

Let's just rehash the definitions

1.
a. Physical activity that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often engaged in competitively.
b. A particular form of this activity.
2. An activity involving physical exertion and skill that is governed by a set of rules or customs and often undertaken competitively.
3. An active pastime; recreation.

People can't just redefine terms to suit their own purposes.

The oxford dictionairy is probably as official as it gets for the english language.  Sport is defined as "an activity involving physical exertion and skill in which an individual or team competes against another or others for entertainment"

Like it or not, chess does not fit this definition.  You would have to redefine the meaning of 'sport' to make chess fit... and if you did that, Farmville would also fit the definition of 'sport'.

But we are obviously talking about athletes in the mental sense of the word. Judit often has been called ''the greatest female athlete of chess.'' The reason why this statement was particularly important is because no other female in any other sport has held such a title for such a long time.

I can make almost playing anything a sport except for ONE.

I can make playing a simple game of cards a sport. A physical activity that is easy players already slam the cards when they think they have a strong hand and sitting for hours at a time is already built in some games. In some Casinos they step on your foot to distract you during play. Then add in the use of alcohol in casinos which has an unwanted desire during play. Sure we can substitute something for the kids.

Bigger cards and heavier with a possible chance of them falling and opponent seeing what is in your hand. Still easy. How about the chance to make any opponent of your choice each hand to cause their chair to rock till the end of the game or bounce. Or make it go back away from the table and they have to throw their card on the table then for it to be in play. If it miss the table .......they lose. If it happens 3 times they are eliminated from the round.

I already covered .....2. An activity involving physical exertion. I can still add more things to make card playing a sport. Ever see a game called Oh Sit. Make the 2 players with the worse hands run around the a large table. Every time they get to where the cards are they get to pick a card... 1 card at a time. If they miss picking up a card they can not go backwards. The player with the best hand without dropping any cards and returning that hand to where cards are located wins. In the event of a tie the player reaching the cards first wins and gets to return to the round and compete against the other players.

By just having a clock and making a large .... large board where the pieces are as tall as the person where they have to run out to move them to make a move would make it a sport. Plus keep in mind they still can not touch the opponent pieces without saying the magic words which really comes into play as you can not bump into them at all.

Golf is not a sport.

They play in such beatiful weather and wear such pretty uniforms.... correction outfits. And get a ride to the next ..... and have somebody carrry their stinking equipment. The crowd has to be quite or they cry like a Madonna even more if they see a camera flash. Not to mention in all this sunny beautiful weather they have to have a umbrella so it will not damage their delicate skin. Time to take an interview the gold players have to have make up and make sure their hair is done.

When the real atheletes show up to play it they have remove the sugar out the game and add some steak to it by playing $1,000 dollars a hole, cigars and trash talk.

I'd be very happy if chess is never considered a sport, because sports, as they currently exist (beyond the amateur level, that is) are wastes of time and money and do nothing to make people smarter (the opposite, usually).  Chess fosters foresight, planning, strategy, pattern recognition... and also rarely gets fans so riled up that they attack and kill judges or players or "opposing" fans.

(am I just a little bit cynical today regarding college and pro sports in America?)

royalbishop

I like to add to my comment on cards can be made as a sport!

We used to play a card game that was brutal in my neighborhood it was not a sport but with some alterations it could easily be a sport. Well the requires several players to make it physical. I think we started off with each player getting 6 cards. I know how is getting physical?

Fist starts off with top card turn over. The player with the highest card wins the opportunity to throw their card first next round. Now you want to get rid of your cards mainly the red cards as their is a penalty for having them later in the game. Now if you do not have heart, spade, diamond  or club that was thrown out first you have to pluck from the deck till you get one. If you pick the reamaining of the deck you lose.

Again the goal is to get rid of all your cards mainly the red cards. The last person left lays down all their cards. Each red card gives each player a chance to hit you.... on your knuckles any ....ANY WAY THEY DESIRE with the cards.

1) The Sliding Card hit which leaves worse paper cuts than you ever saw and blood on the knuckles.

2) The Running Card hit where the opponent backs up with the cards bent and hits your knuckles.

3) The Jumping Off something tall to hit your knuckles.

4) The Edge Hit, where the short side and just come down vertically and hit your knuckle with may be as brutal as #1 listed

5) Now for some history. It started off with knuckels in the air and you get hit. It evolved to hand on steps and getting hit which really hurts seeing overs get and bruised on hand and knuckles.
