Well it was a good idea, but according to Wikipedia due to its location many people live in poverty...but surely it couldn't have been abandoned all together?
I want to go there!

Please post coordinates for google earth to look there, or google maps, or insert screenshort right here. Very curious what are you talking about, i have no idea at all.
Thanks for replying, especially since you live in Ukraine. Also, have you been to Chess City? If so, what was your experience of the place?
Give me a few minutes and I will post the photo I'm talking about.

Here's one of the photos I was talking about. The landscaping seems to be neglected. In some earlier photos the landscaping was either new or being maintained. (I'm not sure of dates, however, so much of this is simply based on my own interpretation and not on any known facts. That's why I'd like to hear from anyone with real knowledge of what's going on in Chess City.)
If nothing else, I have not heard for a long time about any international chess events taking place there.
The coordinates of Chess City, by the way, are: 46.296929, 44.297690.
If you want some more information about Chess City, check out the book Chess Artist, by J. C. Hallman. It's from 2004, but even then Chess City seemed to be in decline. It's only a average book in my opinion, but the parts that take place in Kalmykia are interesting.
From the book, the weeds seem to be an issue since Chess City is right next to the steppe and everything blows in.

Yes, I've read that book. In fact, it sparked my original interest in Chess City.
by the way it is mentioned in this thread, i thought it was going to be more like Dubai's world islands.

From what I've read, an earlier plan for Chess City called for it being built in Dubai. Why this never happened, I don't know. Here's an additional article:

I don't hear anything anymore about Chess City in Elista, Kalmykia. No tournaments, no anything.
I took a look at the development using Google Maps, and there seems to be weeds growing on the properties and in the streets. Sort of a chess Disneyland in decline.
I don't suppose this has anything to do with Ilyumzhinov not standing for re-election of president in Kalmykia, but does anyone know if Chess City is being neglected, or even abandoned and deserted?
