turtle, the general points system followed is as follows:
pawn - 1pt.
knight/bishop - 3pts.
rook - 5pts.
queen - 10pts.
of course points are not everything... the position of your piece also matters.. for example you might not mind losing a bishop or rook to save a pawn on the 7th row.. and points dont have any bearing on the game result.. it is just a basic framework to help beginners understand the value of different pieces
Queen is 9 points
Why I started with 800?
When you created your account you are asked your skill level. Each skill level is assigned a different initial rating.
No, actually @Martin_Stahl. On the app it just gave me an 800 rating without asking. About a year ago I made an account on my computer and it asked my skill level.
So am I below, at or above average?
My Blitz rating is exactly 1000 (which is 53.7%)
My Rapid rating is 1138 (which is 59.5%)
My Glicko RD is much lower in Blitz because that is what I mostly play.
So if 1200 is "average" then I am below average but my percentile is above 50%.
Thoughts?
Are ratings a measure of strength, or of how one rates against the current roster of players?
It used to be the latter, but lots think today it is the former.
Is how the engine measures it the norm these days?
I agree!
