Yes, I think I probably could. Not certainly, but probably. GM would be a much tougher proposition though.
Could you become an IM?

My own take: I don't have the visualisation skills to become an IM. And, while I believe those skills can be improved, I do think that, after a certain age, there's probably a ceiling.

Hi Danny,
That was my first question: Is it so easy for these guys that they can't imagine being us?

Larry Christiansen never reached IM, but he devoted himself to chess.
He is a Grandmaster since 1977.

Fact Check. He's a grandmaster.

"If you didn't have to work etc, could you become an IM?"
I played chess in my teens and stopped during vital exam years. By my early twenties I really had much better things to do with my time. I realised I was at my talent ceiling and playing some knock about games with a GM proved it.
With age, both the visualisation skills and memory goes.
To be an IM you have to be as good a player as the IM's you are playing.
1800 to 2100 is one mountain. Then 2100 to 2400 (IM) is even more steep. Finally 2400 to 2700 (SGM) is even steeper.

Lol, it was a joke. Of course I know that, he is my coach.

can anyone be at the top 0.4 percent in a game that requires no-trivial amounts of spatial intelligence and a level of obsession that makes most nerds seem mild?

I heard a GM say anyone could become an IM - if they devoted themselves to chess.
So, my question; What do you reckong? If you didn't have to work etc, could you become an IM?
If not, why not?
Sometimes people forget that there are MILLIONS of people with an IQ below 85.
Chess isn't about intelligence, but if you're too dumb to take care of yourself, there's no way you can be an IM.
For an average person, starting at a young age, and devoting themselves to chess, maybe it's possible. But a GM is like an idiot in evaluating such things. If they want to make grand claims, let's seem them:
1) start coaching
2) accept any pupil
3) produce a bunch of titled players
Otherwise they should be quiet. Their obvious ignorance is embarrassing by proxy.
What does this have to do with IQ level?

since when has IQ and chess having no relation been established as some tautology?
IQ hate has really gone overboard as of late. i have even seen some cheeky people on quora who have jobs someone with an IQ of 85 cannot possibly hold bragging how they have an IQ of 80 so IQ tests are bullshit. that's not how you disprove the validity of a test.

also IQ clearly has something to do with it, anyone who says otherwise is just mad they have a low IQ

No way. If everyone could just become whatever with hard work we'd have a lot of everything. Some people (like me) will only get so good at chess. It's not a game of smarts but your brain does have to be wired in certain way in order for you to be able to advance to higher level. I doubt that there can be an actual logical counter argument against this.
