Criticism of Chess.com University Prodigy Program

  • #201

I've no issue. You paid them to write this. The young fellow has been working with coaches well before he enrolled in your program.

The Battle of Chess Improvement Ideas and the Price for Chess Improvement Training.  I'm neutral in this conflict, but wanted to register that I thought the back-and-forth in this lengthy thread was helpful.

And for what it's worth, I didn't think that anyone was ill-intentioned towards anyone else either.  I thought the disagreements were constructive.

The real test of an educational program is how well it teaches untalented middle-aged adults... of course, prodigies will improve and understand stuff that is improperly taught or poorly presented, because they are prodigies.

Myself? I am most certainly the middle-aged opposite of a prodigy, but I am interested in the program after reading through this thread and seeing how much time and money I have spent on chess over the years without great improvement.

But what if we have very busy work lives? I can't make the exact times of these live classes most of the time I bet. Is there an alternative? How would a full time working adult with a family do this program with its live classes and specific times for simuls and whatever else requires someone to be logged in at a specific time? What kind of technology and software do I need to get through this program? What if I fall behind? Where do I send these questions? Is there anyone who can answer them? Has anyone done this program while working full time?

I agree - half of our students are adults! Prior to getting involved with Chess University, I was known for being the #1-selling coach on Chess.com (despite not being a titled player). My core competency was teaching - teaching in a way that students can digest. I later created the world's first live, online chess courses from this which were very well received by students. In 2014, we took that to the next level and the Prodigy Program was born. Today, we have a program that has impressed and received the endorsement of some of the most successful chess players in history.

There is no doubt among anybody working at Chess University or anybody who has been a long-term student that the Prodigy Program is the undisputed #1 chess learning program out there. However, that doesn't make it optimal and there are many more improvements to come.

To answer your question, dannyhume, less than half of our students attend the live lessons. Most watch the video recordings of the lessons and keep up at their own pace. How is that different from just watching other online chess videos? The difference is that we coaches are still here for you - if you can't show up live and just watch the recording afterwards, you can still email us with any questions you have and we can help you better understand the material.

You continue having access to a Prodigy Program month you purchase so you can take however much time you need to get caught up. We have some students who purchase one Prodigy Program month every three months or so as that pace works better for them. A stable internet and decent computer is all you need tech-wise, and yes, hundreds of full-time working adults have taken this program including lawyers, engineers, doctors, entrepreneurs, musicians, college deans, entrepreneurs, movie producers, you name it man!

Starting with this upcoming school year, Chess University, Inc. will be the first company to offer a graded, during-school, elective chess class that is taught live entirely online! We have significant backing from doctors, surgeons, and medical professionals who believe that learning and playing chess is academically and mentally beneficial.

In any case, we'll be recording videos, creating brochures, etc. to tell you guys more about what we do but I just want to summarize for now that the Prodigy Program is our company's flagship offering. Starting in July 2017, we are modifying the program to make it a tad less time-consuming.

Feel free to contact us at questions@chessuniversity.com if you have any questions! We don't visit the forums here too often.

We have not paid a penny to the Yoo family to write this. We had asked for their opinion and they were very happy with the program and believed that it helped Christopher become the youngest master in American history.

While I'm at it, I will also let you know that we did not pay a single penny to five-time world champion Vishy Anand for his video endorsement. He, like other top chess coaches and grandmasters, knows that Chess University is a young company that hasn't sought any investments. They genuinely want the program and company to stabilize and grow because they feel we're a force for good in the chess world that truly cares about its students.

Which one of your students are in the top 1000 chess players.

    @Stephenson2,

Top 1000 in the world or top in their age group? We don't presently cater to NMs trying to become GMs. Our focus is on helping novices and intermediate players become advanced players and experts. When we launch a 2000+ section of the Prodigy Program, we will focus on taking experts to NM level, and when we launch a 2200+ program, we will devote time to turning students into IMs and GMs. Though we have not yet decided our plans for the 2200+ course as the potential pool of students is rather small.

We have other projects keeping us busy too. For example, Chess University this year will be the first company to offer a during-school, graded, elective chess class that's taught entirely online.

I dont see why people hate on the University. Like yeah, they are here to make money. Delete that KarlMarx.exe file from your brain guys because it is seriously messing with you. PEOPLE HAVE TO EAT. THEY NEED TO MAKE MONEY. Some build houses to get money, others play with your dreams, build up fake hopes and then give you MEDIOCRE chess classes but at the end of the day, it is all the same, MAKING MONEY.

PLEASE DONT KILL ME ERIK, I DID NOT SAY WHO PLAYED WITH DREAMS AND PROVIDED MEDIOCRE CHESS CONTENT.

Also, Magnus Carlsen had to study 10+ years to reach the top . Do you really think you can become a top player by studying chess online with a fake Vishy Anand hologram? You must be on a high ammount of ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES BUDDY.

If chess.com actually makes a program designed to make people IMs I will feel HIGHLY OFFENDED and WILL TURN MY ADDBLOCKER ON AGAIN.

Some of those are legal where Chess University's CEO lives.
