Does chess really make you intelligent

People say playing chess makes you intelligent I am a 1600 but I just started to get really low marks in school the last two tests I really study hard but still no changes any suggestions?

thank you in advance

I think chess may help develop some things that can contribute to intelligence like visualizing, thinking ahead, patience, pattern recognition etc.

But playing chess alone will definitely NOT make anyone intelligent in any kind of useful way in everyday life. You will need to use the skills you develop playing chess to study etc. and only then might chess help you become more intelligent in a way that is useful outside of those 64 squares.

Also there is another point to be made:

While chess might help develop skills that can contribute to intelligence, I am pretty sure you would become far more intelligent if you spent all the time you spend playing chess on studying maths, physics, chemistry, history and so on.

So in a way, playing chess might just contribute to you becoming less intelligent than you could have become, had you invested the same amount of time on studying.

This also might be the reason behind your marks getting lower. Maybe you have spent a little too much time on chess and that has taken away time from those studies?

mhm.. i guess it can help you in some logic tasks and i think that chess players are usually a bit better in math compare to an "average person"... but its not something much significant probably.. if you wanna be good in school, rather study the school subjects instead of chess

Chess is clever excuse to waste time

Chess can help to remain an active brain when you are very old.

As chess does contribute to some aspects of heavier thinking, it should not be used directly as strengthening intelligence. Tetris may help with use of space and developing better strategies towards storing things, while chess is more analytical, and can help open up the part of the mind that deals with theorizing and seeing what can happen next, to make the best action.

Different things helps with different aspects of mental growth, they shouldn’t be compared with your intelligence as a whole.

No.

Play less and study more then play more chess when school is done. That is what I did when I got my degree in mathematics. So now I'm good at math but stink at chess. Math pays more so it's all good

yeah i have to agree and i can give an example of this.

So a few months ago a streamer introduced me to super auto pets(it is a strategy game), and after a week of practice i was able to hold my own despite being 50+ hours less time then him.

I feel like chess is a game to help you strategize quicker, and under pressure, and also make you more flexible, for your strategy to change as the game goes on. Chess is a game where you have to be observant and you have to try to think 2-3 steps ahead of your opponent. I think that its more likely to help you on an IQ test than a standard school test

What do you guys think

Why would anyone want to waste their time, studying chess when there’s more worthwhile things in life to study . 🤷‍♂️

I think chess made me more patient and taught me to study, and I know smart people who enjoy chess, but I don't think that if someone who is not naturally gifted in school takes up chess they will magically become more intelligent.

With that being said, I have also sometimes chosen chess over studying which has ironically meant worse grades for me.

Yeah, I'd say it made me intelligent!

Studying for a degree 📜 is more important to me, than studying a board game ! 🤷‍♂️
korotky_trinity

What good is in this school education in general ?

It doesn't make people more clever than they are.

Only more informed maybe.

These forums show there are many stupid people who play chess.
