Does the results you want hold you back?

I was just wondering today if my end results that I would like to have happen are dampening my spirits for chess and/or causing frustration. I know that I want to be ata  certain rating by the end of the year, less than 200 points away, but when I don't see my practice turning into positive results...wins...I get discouraged and want to quit. My thought process is that I don't have the ability to play chess at 200 points above where I am at now.

So I was curious to know if others are frustrated by putting end results on yourself, instead of just practicing hard, playing hard, and enjoying yourself?

Yes. Every day.

Just keep working and at some point you will gain a new level of understanding how to play (or NOT play) the game. Then your rating increases noticeably. At least that's how it is with me.

Focusing on your goal can impair your performance. Notice how super-GM never tell about their tournament goals but always say that they take 'one game at a time'.

It doesn't mean that they don't care about their tournament results, but they know the best way to get good results is to play good moves, so that's what they're focused on... Cool

In OTB tournament play, wanting a not too bad tournament result or rating change causes me to offer and accept draws in seemingly equal endgames instead of playing them out (and learning about endgames by the way). It's different to "just for fun" club play where we play everything out to the two lone kings.
