I guess there is some agreement between place 3 holders. If both have the same number of trophies they both advance and they stopped playing.
I stopped playing yesterday morning since I was only on 7 th place at the time, 400 trophies behind 3 rd, and now I am 5 th. So two accounts were removed in the meantime....
