The US had a trade embargo at the time. Earning money playing chess violates our nation’s economic sanctions. It’s not the taxes that Bobby should have been concerned about, but the trial, fines, and possibly jail.

If I remember correctly, at the 1992 match, Fischer declared that he had not paid any taxes for years. Don’t know how much, if anything, he would have owed.

It's not a double standard.

Clinton paid his and shared the returns. So did Bush.

Fischer did not get in trouble during the current regime. Were he still alive, D.T. would have pardoned him.
