What should I do to get better ive done all the basics what next

Well, there is a lot. Some of the basics I'm trying to work on are board visualization. If I say c5 g7 b3 do you immediately know what color squares those are? Without looking at a board, what is the quickest way to move a knight from e1 to b8? Stuff like that.

How does knowing any of this stuff actually help unless you're playing blind?

It helps because every move (pretty much) you need to visualize your move, then his possible response and so on. you need to see the board without moving anything, just doing it all in your head. You have to know what squares are what colors, or your analysis will be off. Lot's of reasons, and if you google 'chess board visualization' you'll get some reasons.
