So the run is over.
Has Wesley So been the Best Chessplayer in the world for the past 18 months or so?
Does anyone really care? It was obviously going to end at some point. Everyone loses.
It's a chess forum. Chess related news should be discussed.

Yes, people care. It's a big deal, especially because it has allowed Kramnik to regain World #2.

Everyone loses, but when and why and how often vary greatly among people/players. It was obviously going to end at some point, but at what point, and how? That was interesting. You don't often see such lengthy winning streaks at such high-level competition!
And if you don't care, it doesn't mean that others shouldn't/don't.
Do you have anything interesting to say?
Wesley So is likely a future world champion, maybe even as soon as the next cycle. He's clearly among the top 5 in the world.
Perhaps it's in poor taste to mention this (I'm not trolling).. ... but he has a noticeable lisp. I think, with effort, this can be corrected by a speech therapist. I wonder if he's considered therapy. When he wins the championship, he's going to get a lot of attention in the US and lots of tv interviews and appearances on late night shows. The lisp might limit the endorsements he can get.
Wesley So sounds like a little girl when he talks. Acts like one too. Not a fan.
Nobody's beating him.
He's maintaining clear first in Tata Steel seemingly effortlessly.

The original comment was addressing the fact that apparently no one cares enough to talk about it. And he was talking about the fact that this one game ended the streak, not the fact that this one game gave Kramnik #2. That's far more interesting that a streak.
People don't typically care about streaks once they're over. No one really cared about the Cubs 100 year + World Series dry spell after it ended. Cubs fans were excited they won. But it was barely a topic for small-talk.
its hard to say who the best player is. Its like comparing lebron james and kobe bryant. At that level, everyone is so good that you cant tell. Magnus Carlsen has been so dominant over the years, but at the end can be he put as the best player? Noone knows because at that level there is so little separating the best players. Also, players tend to change their performance in a matter of months and are you talking about best in terms of skill or like performance? Also, in chess, playing with white is totally different from playing with black so you would have to say best in terms of color. Magnus is considered the best over the years I believe because he has won a significant number of his games as white and he doesnt do bad with black. Great players play on such a different level that its hard for us mortals to gage their games. For instance, while a regular GM sees 11 moves ahead, a 2800 player might be able to see 20 moves ahead and play at that level is difficult to compare in my opinion. In terms of performance, my ranking would be as follows:
rank 1: carlsen
rank2:caruana, nakamura, so, others who are in that category
rank3:2500-2700GMs
rank4:IMs and lower
I did a google search, when I got as far as 'Wesley', the following names appeared as options:
Wesley Snipes
Wesley Matthews
Wesley Tucker
No idea who the latter two are. So is likely to be the next WC, and I'll bet he is the first to pass 3K Elo.
Lets better discuss who will be the next player to get hyped up? First it was Caruana, his hype died after he lost the Candidates and now lost some elo points. Then it was So`s turn to get hyped after some good results. While his hype will slowly die from now on, who will be the next candidate that is supposedly to snatch Magnus Carlsens crown? My new hype candidate is Levon Aronian, he just had a strong tournament... while Magnus is still the #1 by a big margin.

He should have lost the 2nd playoff game to Onischuk in the U.S. Championships, but Onischuk blew a winning position.
Also, it doesn't seem like he's kept up with Carlsen in most events and it's a really kind of crazy to dismiss Carlsen when he successfully defended his World Championship just 5 months ago against the player that beat everyone else to become the challenger.
