How do you play 3 minute chess?

Sort:
SmurfOnSteroids

I've brought my rating to 1350 this past week in a normal 15-30 minute game, but these 3 and 5 minute games are ridiculous.

The one time I beat a 1000+ player on these time controls was setting up a Hedgehog, then moving my king back and forth from g8 to h8 until he commited to an attack (time win).

3 minute chess is like correspondence compared to 1 minute.

It's simple. Make good moves quickly.

It's like asking how can people type 100 world per minute when you're just learning to type without looking at your hands and can barely manage 20 words per minute.  It may sound like randomly smashing keys, but what it produces is intelligible.  Titled player's blitz games have fewer errors than your correspondence games Tongue Out  It's because after that much practice and patterns in long term memory, whole sequences of moves can be "seen" immediately... just like when you can type fast enough you're not doing it letter by letter anymore, but word by word.

Hmm, if you don't type well then think of it like reading.  At first you have to sound out words.  Later in your life you can read multiple words in the same time frame.

Ya just learning how to move fast: not play chess!

Put a 5 second bonus into your time controls.  Game in 3/5.  Simple.

And don't be surprised if your playing strength is roughly 200 points lower at that speed. Mine certainly is.

The 5 second bonus, at any speed you find comfortable, (from Game in 3/5 up to Game in 60/5) will greatly improve your ability to CONVERT winning endgame positions "on the board," instead of "on the clock."

You need to be a bit more patient when you post your "open seeks" with a time bonus. Often times you will wait a minute or two to get an opponent assigned.

"The Kids" (and many strong players) on this site are super fast at Game in 3/0, and in Bullet chess.  Oh, to be young again.

There's a large number of folks on the site that play at Game in 10/5 speed.

Try that, if you wish.

Personally, I don't play 3 minutes games as they are just too fast for me, & loose too many on time; I like to play 5 minutes to 10 minutes games; they are a lot of fun and You can actually do some thinking!

For a beginner like you, I would NOT recommend any speed under 30 minutes.

Quickly, lol.

It's a lot of errors and can be bad for your regular chess game if you get into making quick decisions. I enjoy it because there are mistakes.  the games are quick and fun. If you make mistakes don't beat yourself up, most likely opponent will too. Just remember to take time when you play untimed chess.

I can play better blitz than correspondence my blitz I s 300 points higher than my online chess stats and u have to disagree with the person who said just move fast it doesn't work like that its not bullet and even in bullet u have to stop and think sometimes you exercise your tactical thinking and making good moves quickly u even have a chance to beat higher rated chess players :)

Elubas

Agreed with wafflemaster.

Badly! :)

Jokes apart ... the posts about good speed players instant-recalling stored patterns that get cemented after years of playing "slower" games are 100% true.  You just get better at it as and when your slow game improves. I don't think playing 10000 3-min games is an efficient way to get better at 3-min games  ... the brain cements patterns effectively only if it gets a chance to visualize, calculate and burn in the pattern it sees on the board (happens in slower games only!)

Ditto on the comment about playing blitz with time-delays and increments.  These make a good attempt at civilizing these rogue clock-gaming bastard speed-games to resemble actual chess :)

My online chess rating is currently 351 higher than my blitz rating.

have an opening memorized that you can stick to for the most part regardless of your opponent's moves.  spend less time on the opening and spend more time thinking during the middlegame.    Sacrifice and quick simplification are both good strategies if played correctly and with purpose.

Egads.

This is a great example of how blitz/bullet can negatively affect your play. In some cases it just takes time away from serious study, and in other cases it instills bad habits. This particular piece of advice seems to have both covered.

My assumption is that most people want to get better at OTB chess, either quick or regular. If your goal is to get better at internet blitz/bullet, by all means take the above advice to heart.

essential to fight in Zugzwang though

5 moves: the first thing about chess, to get a solid base from which to work, is by examining your first 5 moves and then comparing it to others.

Laskers purple book said you just get better at the opening. Of course, because you always play it- but there is something called "Directed Attention".

Look at the first 5 moves and in 6 months you will have a base from which to enjoy 3 minute chess,... guaranteed!!

("...or your money back...", lol! "I'M EXCITED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!")

Ya see, now you can learn productively from your losses by directing your attention to those first 5 moves!

Well described Moses, that is why IMO anything below G-10 is bad for your chess health.  Though I notice very strong blitz players are very good defenders & welcome superficial attacks (which end up costing the attacks, not them, clock time as they are beaten back & then attacked themselves).

I know this one female in a 2 minute game and as soon as you look like you might mate her she starts moving her king all over the board and throwing pieces in your way. And she won and won and won. That was just one of her strategies that was so irritating.
