How does one become a natural at chess?

we're talking about hair color. Many people are destined to live the next life as a blond or with never a grey hair.

Oh, I get the connection - life is a bleach, and then you dye.

He's quick now, the boy's a natural.

The problem with chess is talent can't be faked.  I'm screwed, so why do I still like it so much?

Yes, but if someone was uneducated, say raised by wolves, their natural ability would be wasted, and they would be non-verbal, perhaps scratching and licking themselves....   Smile

But if a person never knew of some "thing" to which they could have an ability, because they are never exposed to it, it wouldn't exsist for them in the first place. So maybe it's not wasted. I've never been exposed to shooting poisoned darts through a blow gun, I could be a natural, I'll never know unless I try. So I'm not wasting a "possible" ability. I'm just wasting my time not trying new things. I have a natural ability at procrastination and it gets in the way of my great success at some "thing". lol

As for wolf-boy, would he pick up some natural ability as a wolf? He woudn't have a natural ability for good eye sight compared to his pack. But he has a natural ability to reach higher and use an opposible thumb. Whether he ever learns this and uses it is one thing, but the natural ability still exsists. So I guess there is a case for nuture over nature.

If you have the capacity to shoot poison darts through a blow gun, it doesnt really matter that you never realise that potential. You might use it for other things. You could still be the best at blowing rolled up pieces of paper across the table through a straw at McDonalds.

I think you are seriously underestimating our ancestors.  It's no accident they lived through it, that takes the most brains, just staying alive.   For some reason when mankind went to Alaska and met the aboriginal natives they had an incredible ability to learn mechanics  even though they had never seen machines before.

Sometimes I scratch and lick myself during a very tough blitz match as a way of relieving stress.  And remember, it's never too late to be razed by wolves.

Dischyzer

Razed by wolves . . . not funny . . . <giggle>

The best way is to try not to be a natural. Just play the game.

Dischyzer

sometimes I hate the game but never the player. Even when the player is myself.

I agree with you that our ancestors are highly intelligent. The pyramids are examples of high engineering knowledge.

You see it all over the place.  Engineering skill and feats that even have us scratching our heads today, requiring knowledge of sophisticated math.  So then one wonders why there are not signs of even more advance machines and technologies.  Why stone, etc?

On one hand, we know that were the power to get cut off and humanity wiped out, the Earth would quickly engulf the cities and it would be a far shorter time than we can imagine before any obvious traces of our civiliation would be gone.  So 5000 - years that could wipe out a lot of fragile technology.

Or was it that they didn't go beyond a certain point because they understood the downsides of too much technology and the value of having a natural and spiritual balance?  No idea.  But it is interesting to me.

Dischyzer

Wait . . . I thought the pyramids were built by aliens.

Dischyzer

Oh that was a movie.

Dischyzer

Natural pyramid building ability?

corrijean

Oh goody! Another chance to post a video of Wally Wallington!

Dischyzer

It's interesting to see the timeline of technology and how fast it is expanding. But you are right refectivist, the earth will win out in the end. Then what do we make of humans short time inhabiting the planet?

Mandy711

Perhaps our ancestors already understood the harmful effects of tapping energy resources which release masses of harmful by products like carbon dioxide and nuclear waste?

Dischyzer

corrijean, that was an informative video. Pretty cool engineering.

Thanks. And to top it off the guy has a super cool name. Laughing
