you can say many bad things about america, i can at least. but when it comes to money all humans are the same. At least america is the centre of the world, so you can buy everything in america. real japanese sushi, real stuff from china.

i was in mexico airport, there was a coke machine and like 5 metres before was a mexican women selling coca cola for double the price the machine took. when i went to wal mart in mexico they really wanted to charge me 5 dollars for a milkshake. you must realize that you can even get huge tamales in mexico for 50 cent that fills you like a real meal.

if life has told me anything than when it comes to money everyone is the same, there are absolutly no exceptions.

It is like the Beatles said : Money can't buy you love.

btw you know there is an interesting story from the oscar wilde, where he cried till a dove commite suicide to fulfill the conditions of a girl so she would dance with him.

when the dove died he went to the girl and the girl said forget it i take someone who has more money and also looks better.

I think 3 million would be enough to quit chess (and job). I would then dedicate myself to painting, having the only thing painting can't give to a person -> money.

How much money would have to be offered to you before you would give up chess?

By "give up chess" I mean to get rid of all your books and chess sets and chess engines and chess stuff and chess trophies and Chess.com and never play chess again in your life.

This is an interesting question...

I don't own any chess books....*check*, nor do I own or have or understand what a chess engine is *check*, no chess trophies *check*, or chess stuff *check*... however I do have a chess set, which was an expensive gift, it wouldn't be right to give that away, nor would I want to, I'm not money-motivated or money driven, or what some of my fellow felines have been labelled with, gold digger, I'm quite happy to keep my set Smile Unless every government of the world was willing to do more about endangered species and unregulated anti-vivisections, not really about money again but you get the picture.

Now of course someones financial situation and their annual income would be a big factor... But to force me to leave chess.com for exchange of money... hmm, its a nice free service no doubt, but it would have to an absurd amount, simply because its such a mundane idea that it would require an equally absurdly amount of money.

$50,000. But I'd probably find a substitute like Shogi or Go.

There is always this consideration.  If you are well off financially it still might be a good idea to accept a sum of money to give up the game as the money could be used for a charital purpose to help others.

I believe I breifly mentioned this too, wanting to help save endangered species and finding alternatives to slow down deforestation is a sort of charity, I don't believe it to be our sole duty, but being intelligent rational beings, we can certainly find ways to help. So charity isn't a bad idea, but this is hypothetical...

In Holland we have this charity fund to fight cancer. They held a bicycle race at Alpe de Huez (France) last summer where people could donate money. They collected about 2 million Euro , but in the end there was only 200.000 Euro left. The managers of the fund took the rest as salary. Modern charity !

lol, that wasn't the question.  the question is what is the minimum it would take to give up chess.  chess isn't worth 100,000 euros let alone 100 million

tliu1222

$999999999999999? Maybe.

granitoman

Give me a Cannondale or a Giant road bike, a Santa Cruz or Pivot trail bike,  an Alembic Stanley Clark bass and a Gallien Krueger Amp and we have a deal.

Irontiger

No less than $1000, no more that $1m, but I can't tell for sure.

royalbishop

Yeah i may give up "Chess" for money but i get it on paper.

When i get the money i will start playing "Vote Chess" and "Chess960".

?? No way i take the money. A person that likes/loves to do something can not be swayed by money alone to give it up.
