How much time do you give chess on a daily/weekly basis?

I realize this has probably come up before, but I'm curious as to how much time the average person puts into the game.I can see that I am spending a decent amount of time daily with chess, basically not to become a GM(ha)....but simply because I enjoy it immensely....I find I am getting better slowly and that's fine with me.....Thanks in advance for any comments...-happy.png

usually play 3 or 4, 10 min games a day after the family is all in bed and I have some silence

On a good day, I get to spend 5-6 hours on chess study. More commonly, it's 2-3 hours and on really bad days less. Average is probably between 3 and 4 hours. If only I could have done that 50 years ago. frustrated.png

Methinks anyone,at any age,who spends that amount of time on chess(or any endeavor) will find rapid improvement,

My understanding of the game has definitely improved a lot. Just as importantly, I have identified my primary weaknesses and am working on them. The missing element for real improvement is playing frequently, which I intend to do this year.

Acroduster

Too much time.

Markle

Not as much as I need to

I have to add that my approach is very similar with my tennis,in my younger/serious years.I was a competitive player(locally and in school).I played second singles for my high school and our team won the City Wide Championship in NYC,,,,many moons ago.

At that time,I agonized about winning and play. However,as I aged(and actually got better) I left the anxiety of the "win" behind and simply played a lot.

My game took off and I started to play very well and enjoyed it better.I believe that an approach to chess is similar....Play/enjoy/take time to study and analyze and you can became pretty good, which is enough for me...maybe not others though. -happy.png

When im preparing for a tournament? 90 minutes a day.

When im not?  not much, if any time at all.

I haven't done anything with chess in like 3 months. I tried a strict schedule of 15 minutes every 3 days, but even that yielded disaster and calamity.

lol...disaster and calamity describes my chess.  As i posted earlier, except for some "minimal" effort to prepare for a tournament.  I dont do any serious study anymore.  I just enjoy the game now.

I think that's the best way to play. I get a vibe from many people here that chess is some kind of compulsion they're trying to convince themselves is enjoyable to feed. I'm sure that for many, putting in hours a week really is, but it's certainly not a one size fits all thing. Fun just doesn't work that way.

Strangely, my play has gotten better since i quit taking studying seriously.

On average, about 25 minutes per day. I do the chess.com tactics, which takes about 10 to 15 minutes per day. I might read the forums, and play zero games. But other days I will maybe do one or two tactics and play one or two games. If I'm away from home, zero minutes per day. And Friday night game night, it could be 2 hours playing.
