How superior was Karpov to all others?

Say, aren't you missing recess or something, kiddo?  And since you (obliviously) said there was "no doubt," what's left to argue? Wink

Oh hey, it's AnthonyCG! Laughing

Kohai doesn't like pancakes in the forums so I have to be creative. I think she likes waffles. Cool

AndyClifton

Plus he'd still be skinny enough to squeeze past turnstiles and ride the subways for free!

Is Karpov the fellow who disliked shampoo?

AndyClifton

No, that was Chucky.

How superior was Karpov to all other great players? With no doubt he is the greatest player of all times. He has won more tournaments than any other (160!!!) and was World Champion for  the unprecedented 16 years. To me the closest to him (though distant second) is Kasparov. However, most of Kasparov's wins were opening preparation and home studied lines. So maybe we can consider Fischer, Smyslov or Spassky as second all time best player.

Karpov was Champion for 10 years only 1975-85

 1975-1985, 1993-1999

lol...yeah sure, 1993-99... Laughing  Talk about dates requiring an (*)...

Even if you accept GPG's claim that Karpov was world champion for 16 years, it is the "unprecedented" part which makes absolutely no sense to me.  Lasker was champion for 27 years, Alekhine for 17 years.  Sounds pretty precendented to me.

That was too long ago. We shouldn't consider anyone before Botvinnik era.

No doubt! (heehee!)

goldendog

FIDE paper champion...a step or two short of true world champion then.

He lost his match with Short, who was crunched by Kasparov.

Karpov the world champ then?

Hardly.

I don't consider anyone before November/December 2013.  Whoever wins, Carlsen or Anand, will be the unprecedented only Chess World Champion ever.

No, actually he used to smoke cats at the board to annoy his opponents.

Somethin' like that..

Beachdude67

I would say that certainly, from 75-85 Karpov was the strongest player in the world perhaps excepting Fischer, who refused to play. Karpov's tournament results during this period reflect that.

Well, let me think, Fischer was a flash in the pan, Kasparov just had good openings, Carlsen just wins because his opponents get tired, Tal just made blunders and his opponents let him mate them, Petrosian just bored his opponents into submission, so it seems Karpov was by far the best.

Allow me to educate you on your chess history.

Karpov....got.....flavored....YOGURT!

So he cannot be considered best.

Now we can consider some other contenders.

Smyslov....won by soviet collusion.

Botvinnik - same.

Euwe....played a drunken Alekhine.

Alekhine played a bored Capablanca.

Capablanca played an over the hill Lasker.

Lasker played an over the hill Steinitz.

Steinitz never played Morphy.

Morphy was the best player ever.

I tried playing a Drunken Alekhine once, but that opening just doesn't seem to suit my style.
