The OP may have a little bit better rating not having the title because if I see a CM or NM next to someone I am playing I put forth more effort in my games and I bet a lot of players better than me do that too.....like to be able to say that I beat one just once but I can't.

It is/was never about me/my rating. I had tried to find about how and why chess.com awards the titles  but I didn't get an answer. This thread here (with a subject line that has a very high "troll potential") created enough attention for serious contributors with knowledge about chess.com proceedings to appear as well. As a result I finally got an answer: lowest level for chess.com titles is USCF Master and/or Fide CM.

The info is in the FAQ: https://support.chess.com/customer/en/portal/articles/1444932-does-chess-com-offer-benefits-for-elite-or-titled-players-

It shouldn't take a year for one's title to be recognised - there's not a dedicated verification team, though, so applications are sometimes processed a bit slowly: an enquiry afer a few weeks via the normal ticketing system (see Help --> Ask a Question) would be fine.
